‘Turning Corners’
by Michael Flaherty, Ceramic Artist
Opening Reception: Friday, August 20th 6-9pm
Show runs August 20th-September 12th.
Michael Flaherty first began to study pottery in high school in the suburbs of Pittsburgh under Keith Herchenroether, a highly regarded pottery instructor and exhibiting artist.
Michael continued to study ceramics at Allegheny Junior College under the direction of Paul Jay, who is well known for his raku work. He then transferred to Slippery Rock University where he majored in Fine Art and Ceramics.
While at Slippery Rock University, under the guidance of internationally renowned Professor Richard Wukich, Michael came to realize the value of ceramics as an important art form and to understand the collective significance of potters through the ages as record keepers of culture and civilization which inadvertently is recorded in their clay work. Michael graduated Summa Cum Laude from Slippery Rock in 1998. Michael then felt the importance of continuing his education at Carlow University where he earned his Master of Education degree.
Michael views his pottery as functional art that can be taken off the shelf and interacted with. “It’s a great conversation starter to serve a meal in a handmade casserole dish or have coffee served in your favorite set of mugs with a friend.” Michael makes his home and runs his studio in Richland Township with his wife and three children, and teaches art for Charleroi Area School District in Southwestern Pennsylvania
